2. Insight: Thoughts on the Management Philosophy of Various Japanese Companies - May 2025
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Some years ago, I was traveling by plane in India. Right around dinner time, I was getting hungry. I was regretting not having eaten a slightly early dinner in an airport restaurant before departure when, as luck would have it, the on-board meal was served. It was a cup noodle; the flavor was curry, to suit Indian tastes. On the cup was the logo of NISSIN.
Today, instant ramen and cup ramen are eaten in all countries, especially in Asia, but the company that first invented it and spread its popularity around the world was NISSIN FOOD PRODUCTS (now NISSIN FOODS HOLDINGS CO., LTD.). NISSIN is renowned as a company with a unique philosophy.
The founder of NISSIN, Momofuku Ando, witnessed the people of Japan suffering from food shortages immediately after the nation was defeated in the Pacific War. He developed instant ramen out of a desire to “help those who are suffering.”
Based on his experiences, he established four missions which became the company’s corporate philosophy.
Mission 1: “Peace will come to the world when there is enough food”
Only once people have enough food, which supports life, do they have the leeway to think about ethics and culture. Only once there is enough food will it be possible to eliminate conflict and achieve peace.
Mission 2: “Create foods to serve society”
Eager to take on new challenges, NISSIN imagines a food culture based on innovative, unprecedent products that provide people with happiness and inspiration.
Mission 3: “Eat wisely for beauty and health”
NISSIN promotes people’s well-being by using ingredients that are not just delicious but also good for you.
Mission 4: “Food-related jobs are sacred profession”
NISSIN should act with the mindset that pursuing food-related work is a “sacred profession” that contributes to people’s health and peace.
The small step that Momofuku Ando took to relieve hardship faced by many people kept growing. Today, NISSIN has now grown to support the food culture of not only Japan but also all over the world. Its unwavering corporate philosophy is part of that process, and Ando’s successors are seeking to maintain those ideals.
