2. Insight: Thoughts on the Management Philosophy of Various Japanese Companies
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Many Japanese companies have adopted the longstanding Omi merchant principle of “benefiting three parties ” as part of their management philosophy. Probably the most famous example of this is ITOCHU Corporation.
Chubei Itoh I , the founder of ITOCHU Corporation, was born in 1842 to a family of Omi merchants in Shiga Prefecture. His family ran a local retail business selling linen products. In 1858, at the age of 15, he began traveling to Osaka and beyond to peddle his wares. According to ITOCHU Corporation’s company history, this year marked the company’s founding. Having been born into a merchant family, Chubei possessed a natural sensibility for business. At the same time, as he was a devout Buddhist, throughout his life, he practiced the principle of “benefiting three parties,” which connects to Buddhist teachings.
His business continued to evolve and be passed down for more than 150 years. Today, ITOCHU Corporation is a general trading company with approximately 90 offices in 61 countries across the world, and operates a wide range of business activities in fields such as linen, machinery, metals, energy, chemicals, food, realty, information, and finance. In 2020, ITOCHU Corporation reaffirmed the principle of “benefiting three parties” as the group’s corporate philosophy, formally declaring to the world its commitment to carry its founding spirit into the future.
Honda Soichiro, the founder of Honda Motor, famous for its automobiles, advocated for the “new benefiting three parties” principle, where the new three parties were selling, buying, and creating. Today, this has been further refined into the corporate philosophy of “the joy of buying, the joy of selling, and the joy of creating.” It’s a message that truly expresses the principle of “benefiting three parties” through the lens of a manufacturing company.
Suntory’s value of "Principle of Dividing Profits Three Ways ," is believed to have inherited this same spirit. It involves dividing profit three ways between “improving services for customers, expanding business, and contributing to society.” This idea aims to promote the growth of customers and businesses while fulfilling the company’s social responsibilities. Through practicing Giving Back to Society, it is believed that companies can build up their trust and brand loyalty.
What do you think? Why not try incorporating the principle of “benefiting three parties” into your own activities and putting it into practice?
To be continued in the next edition.
