Thoughts on the Management Philosophy of Various Japanese Companies - November 2023
In the previous edition of my column articles, I talked about Katsuhiko Wakabayashi, who was determined to develop at any cost fasteners that never come loose for the benefit of the public.
Today, I'm going to talk about how he got the idea that led to the invention of the Hardlock Nut.
He devoted himself to the development of fasteners that never come loose while engaging in his existing metal friction nut (self locking nut which employed leaf springs) business.
He always carried a notebook with him, and he even kept it by his bedside at night so that he could jot down any ideas that came to him.
As soon as he had an idea, he used a machine to embody it and kept improving it while testing how effective it was and how easy it was to use.
"Making something out of nothing" was exactly what he was trying to do, but he was not doing very well.
A fastener should be designed to come loose, but it should never come loose. That was an impossible task to achieve.
He repeated a process of trial and error to make the impossible possible, but his fastener inevitably came loose when it was violently shaken.
He repeated the process over and over again, and those around him finally tried to convince him to stop trying, but Wakabayashi would not give up.
He eventually came to a dead end in his development attempts.
Even though he was such a determined man, he was beginning to think that there was no way he could achieve his goal.
So, he went to visit a nearby Shinto shrine for a change of scene.
While he was there, a kusabi (wedge) that holds the pillars of a torii gate in place caught his eye.
He had a hunch that if he applied the mechanism of a kusabi that has a history of over 1,000 years of holding architectural structures in place, to bolts and nuts, it could provide a powerful anti-loosening effect.
This is where a revolutionary product, the Hardlock Nut, originated.
Kazuo Inamori, who advocated the spirit of altruism, once said, "To beautiful-minded people with dreams who make a harder effort than anyone else, God sheds a ray of light from the Vault of Knowledge as if a torch that lights the way ahead."
I cannot help thinking that what Inamori said is exactly what happened to Wakabayashi at that time.
The kusabi provided Wakabayashi with an inspiration for fasteners that never come loose, but his struggle did not end there.
I will talk about it in the next edition.
To be continued in the next edition.
Stay tuned for the next AOTS E-Newsletter.
