Thoughts on the Management Philosophy of Various Japanese Companies - December 2023
When Wakabayashi saw that there was a kusabi (wedge) driven into the joint of a shrine's torii gate, he was convinced that if the mechanism of the kusabi could be applied to the connection between bolts and nuts, it would be possible to achieve "integrated technology based on kusabi."
However, turning this idea into a specific product was no simple matter.
There was a considerable amount of trial and error involved, but in the end, he was able to make the kusabi mechanism a reality by using two nuts created using a special process.
He called this product the "Hardlock Nut."

Having gone through this struggle, Wakabayashi wanted to make the Hardlock Nut available as soon as possible and make customers happy.
But this also didn't go as he expected.
His business partner in manufacturing the existing products was strongly opposed to Wakabayashi's idea of stopping a business that was already highly profitable and switching to a brand-new Hardlock Nut business, even if it could offer people exceptionally safe products.
"Never mind about a few complaints. Let's sell the existing products that are selling well wherever we can," he insisted.
The biggest difference between Wakabayashi and his partner was their opposing attitudes toward business.
In contrast to the partner, who was strongly motivated by the pursuit of profit, Wakabayashi believed that "profit is the end result, not what you should think about first."
The pair were unable to reconcile their differences.
Wakabayashi then made a decision: he transferred the existing business, which he had founded and in which he had also invested his own money, to his partner for free and started up the Hardlock Nut business from scratch.
In keeping with his firm belief in the "spirit of altruism," he put "making people happy through his inventions" ahead of profit and loss.
To be continued in the next edition.
Stay tuned for the next AOTS E-Newsletter.
