3. Insight: Thoughts on the Management Philosophy of Various Japanese Companies.

Thoughts on the Management Philosophy of Various Japanese Companies - August 2024
When the leaders of a company or organization feel that they have reached their personal limit, they must have the courage to set aside selfish interests and promote talented people they believe are exceptional and qualified, regardless of background, age, or gender, and trust them while nurturing and looking out for them.
Countries and businesses with leaders capable of making such decisions impartially are highly blessed.
Now, let us continue the story of Eiichi Shibusawa.
Following the incident that I discussed last time, he came to have misgivings about the feudal system of the time, which was based on unreasonable class discrimination.
And there was something else that he felt was unreasonable.
In the same way that England had made Qing China a semi-colonial state under the Treaty of Nanking, various Western nations, thanks to their powerful production capabilities and military might, were pushing Japan to sign unequal treaties, about which Eiichi was dubious.
After that, he went to Edo (now Tokyo) for some time, where he devoted himself to learning. However, his belief that it would not be possible to build a better world unless those two unreasonable issues were eliminated gradually grew stronger.
Finally, at the age of 23, he and some like-minded associates plotted to attack a foreign settlement and stage a coup d'etat aimed at overthrowing the Tokugawa administration, which approved of signing unequal treaties with the West.
Persuaded in part by friends who said he must not throw away his life through such reckless behavior, Eiichi thought better of carrying out the plan at the last moment.
He realized it would be better for the world if he kept living no matter what and applied his knowledge and abilities to reforming society.
For a while, Eiichi went into hiding, as he was a wanted person for plotting the coup, but luckily, someone who recognized his ability scouted him to enter the service of the Hitotsubashi household, which was part of the Tokugawa Shogun's family.
Somehow, he had unintentionally risen from farmer status to samurai status.
In fact, at that time, there were more than a few people in the upper ranks of the samurai who believed that the nation of Japan would be in danger if nothing was done.
Despite the rigid class system of the time, some leaders believed in promoting exceptional people regardless of their status.
As a result of this, Eiichi tackled the challenge of reforming society from the standpoint of an official.
This would subsequently lead to Japan becoming a country whose national power was equivalent to Western countries-but that's a story for next time.
<Passing of Katsuhiko Wakabayashi>
Katsuhiko Wakabayashi, the founder and Chairman of Hardlock Industry, who I have discussed multiple times in this column, passed away in July 2024 at the age of 90.
He helped preserve the safety of people around the world through the invention of "fasteners that never come loose," and I am proud to have introduced his "spirit of altruism" to readers.
To be continued in the next edition.
Stay tuned for the next AOTS E-Newsletter.
