Thoughts on the Management Philosophy of Various Japanese Companies - April 2024

Katsuhiko Wakabayashi established Hardlock Industry Co., Ltd. in April 1974.
It's been exactly 50 years this April when this E-Newsletter is delivered.
Today, the Hardlock Nut (or HLN) is used in various industries such as railroads, mining, and construction, as well as for medical devices, sport equipment including F1 cars and bobsleds, musical instruments used by music artists, golf equipment, and many other applications.
This is because, as I mentioned in the previous edition, the HLN, known as the "fasteners that never come loose," has become something like a sanctuary in times of trouble.
Wakabayashi had a desire to bring happiness to people with his inventions.
To make his desire a reality and keep it alive, he felt that each and every one of his employees should also have the spirit of altruism and that the whole company should be united as one team.
Then, he presented his belief to his employees in the form of the code of conduct, "SUJ."
It is an acronym for a Japanese phrase, Sunao-ni Uketome Jikkou.
If you are not familiar with the Japanese language, let me explain in detail what it means.

"Sunao" has the same meaning as a "Sunao Mind," one of the philosophical thoughts advocated by Konosuke Matsushita, Panasonic's founder.
The literature on Konosuke Matsushita's philosophical quotes describes a "Sunao Mind" as follows:
Having a sunao (untrapped or open) mind means being tolerant without selfishness, being open to the teachings of others, and being able to find joy in any circumstances.
"Uketome" literally means "to accept." It can be interpreted as "to accept what society expects of you and understand your true mission."
"Jikkou" means "to move into action," and it should be interpreted as "to achieve it with tenacity."
In other words, "SUJ," as advocated by Wakabayashi, means "to have an open mind, understand your true mission, and achieve it with tenacity," in my opinion.
Of these three types of attitudes, "sunao" is the most important attitude.
People often fail to make fair and impartial decisions because they are gripped by a sense of laziness, obsession, or selfishness.
Wakabayashi believed that overcoming such mindset and maintaining an unbiased "sunao" mind was a shortcut to success, and he also hoped that his employees would always adhere to this view.
That's why it is Hardlock Industry's policy to accept their customers' requests, which, at first glance, may seem impossible to fulfill, and make efforts to satisfy the requests before rejecting them altogether.

To be continued in the next edition.
Stay tuned for the next AOTS E-Newsletter.
